Millennium Park Launch.

The official opening of the Heeley Millennium Park BMX pump track and mountain bike trail was a great success, with novice and expert cyclists keen to try out the new facility.

The event celebrated the completion of the 1st phase of work on the Community Spaces Flagship project by Heeley Development Trust.

The changes to the park have received overwhelmingly positive responses. Local people had the opportunity to mark the park with their own planted trees and instructors from Recycle Bikes helped cyclists to exploit their skills and gain knowledge on the new trail.

As part as of the revamp, new play facilities have been constructed and extensive tree and shrub planting has been implemented with help from local schools, volunteers, Sheffield City Councils Tree Officer and Tinsley Tree Project.

Andy Jackson, Heeley Development Trust Manager, said at the launch: “‘Parks are vital to the way that cities work, they are the lungs of our cities, offering moments of calm, a chance to see wildlife on your doorstep. They define the character and landscape of our neighbourhoods, contributing to health, wellbeing and the economy.

“Given how important they are, it amazes me how difficult it is to fund their maintenance and how quickly their budgets are reduced. This funding from Community Spaces has transformed our park, rekindling local people’s interest and getting people excited and involved again.”

The Heeley Millennium Park is the largest community owned and managed park in Sheffield and has undergone major transformation over the last few months.

The next phase of work on the park will include the installation of new climbing boulders, a multi use games area, an art trail and further shrub and herbaceous planting. Once the full programme of work is completed, the park will be one of a kind, reflecting the countryside on the outskirts of Sheffield, giving users a ‘peek into the Peaks.’

Get over here and give it a go!

Riding in the mud:

So now's the time of year when mountain biking becomes a bit colder and very muddy.
Now, I love playing in the mud as a (sort of) grown up, but it's worth thinking -if it's really that muddy, should I ride it?

You can easily clean your self, clothes and bike when you get home, but what will that trail look like next time?

I'm not riding lots of the local trails during the winter (apart from when the ground's frozen) to not damage the trails. You can turn them into muddy puddles really quickly, which also causes the trail to widen, damaging the natural environment.

If you're planning a ride, think about how it will be compared to summer, and whether it's going to be worth it, and save some for the best weather.

Been speaking to many people who were in the Showroom last week watching From the Inside Out - great MTB film, riders doing HUGE stuff in beautiful British Columbia with posh cameras - trailer below:

Anti Social Behaviour in Meersbrook:

Seen here:
The local Safer Neighbourhoods Team have reported that they will be switching priorities to concentrate on dealing with anti-social behaviour in Meersbrook Park.

Following the latest Police and Communities Together meeting priorities have been amended. Police will up their activity to tackle yobs in Meersbrook Park, particularly at the skate park.

There have been two muggings in the normally crime free Park over the last few weeks. Also criminal damage and vandalism has been a problem, with a new wood sculpture upended and a feature in the playground being set on fire.

If you experience any anti-social behaviour, please report it.

We'd also like to say, we've only seen nice respectful behaviour from kids and young people using the bowl, and hope to see more of it as well as nice riding.

In the meantime, here's an excellent professional display of no handed bike moves. Don't try this at home or on the street...

What we did this summer

& Last Saturday Club

It’s been a right busy summer! We’ve been taking bikes and the ‘Not Shore’ obstacle course all over - including Heeley Festival, Lowedges, Cliffhanger, Ecclesall & Wheata Woods, Parkwood Springs, York, Bradford and Liverpool. That’s all as well as Last Saturday Club at Greenhill Park and Meersbrook Park. We’ve really enjoyed riding with loads of folks and are looking forward to a last few sessions in half term before the bad weather comes in.

I’d really like to thank Barclays Spaces for Sport and the CTC, amongst others, for continuing to support us to deliver free sessions to the young people of Sheffield.

It's Last Saturday Club at Greenhill and Meersbrook on 24th September, and we hope to see you there. 11:30am Greenhill, 2:30pm Meersbrook.

Make sure you’re on our mailing list to find out about the free events running in half term – email bmx@heeleydevtrust.com for details or to get on the list. On your bikes!
